In compliance with the ADA, students must self-identify, provide documentation of their disability, and request services and accommodations. IEP’s and 504 Plans end with high school graduation. Both provide helpful background information, but do not meet the documentation standard for college accommodations. Specific procedures and documentation requirements are in place, but we are still dependent on the student coming forward. Accommodations requested retroactively are not appropriate and generally not provided.
PROCEDURES FOR INITIAL CONTACT
- Students must submit a Request for Services (pdf) and current documentation of their disability. Specific documentation requirements can be obtained on the Student Disability Resource Center website or by calling the Student Disability Resource Center at 478-445-5931, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Students with disabilities will provide sufficient documentation (as determined by the Director) in support of his/her documented disability.
- Basic Documentation Requirements include:
- a current evaluation (less than 36 months old) of the disability from a qualified professional (licensed to diagnose the condition by Georgia law; evaluators may not be friends or family members of the student);
- specific symptoms that are present;
- evidence that these symptoms are associated with substantial impairment in a major life activity;
- a detailed description of current substantial limitation in the academic environment;
- specific requests for accommodations need to be linked to the student's current functional limitations and the rationale for each recommendation clearly stated.
- Basic Documentation Requirements include:
- Documentation will be evaluated and reviewed by the Student Disability Resource Center Director and/or the Regent's Center for Learning Disorders to determine appropriate accommodations. Accommodations for students with diagnosed and documented disabilities will be made on an individual basis.
- If it is determined that the documentation is inadequate in scope or content, or does not address the student's current level of functioning and need for accommodation, or that the evaluator does not have the appropriate qualifications, reevaluation may be required.
- Students requesting accommodations are required to meet with the Director in order to discuss and request academic accommodations. Instructions regarding procedures for the implementation of accommodations will also be shared with the student.
- Reasonable academic accommodations are based on the current impact of the disability on academic performance; therefore it is in the student's best interest to provide current and complete documentation.
- It is important to note that accommodation requests which fundamentally alter the nature of the curriculum or a course learning objective are not considered reasonable under the applicable federal laws. In order to make such a determination, the Student Disability Resource Center consults with appropriate officials who have expertise in the areas the student with a disability is seeking academic accommodations including individual professors, department chairs, etc., to engage in a rational review in order to determine what program/course requirements are “essential.” The Student Disability Resource Center works with the professor and student to consider whether effective alternatives to the requirement exist which would allow the student with a disability to participate without waiving or lowering essential requirements or fundamentally altering the nature of the program.
- Reasonable academic accommodations in the post secondary environment may differ from those available in the secondary school.
- Depending on the nature of the disability and the accommodations requested, the amount of advance notice provided may impact the University's ability to provide accommodations.
- Delays in presenting requests or providing documentation will affect promptness in arranging accommodations
Filing a Grievance:
Complaints of failure to provide reasonable accommodation of a qualified disability or allegations of discrimination based on disability can be filed with the GC Office of Legal Affairs within ninety (90) days of the last incident.
