Reading Specialist Certification

The non-degree reading specialist certification offers practicing teachers an opportunity to pursue an advanced certificate in reading to address a wide range of literacy needs of P-12 students and local schools. Unlike the reading endorsement, the reading specialist certificate is a P-12 certificate in reading that emphasizes effective literacy instruction and best practices across the P-12 continuum, advanced diagnosis and intervention of reading and writing difficulties, school wide literacy initiatives, and literacy leadership through coaching, advocacy, scholarship, and community involvement.

After completion of course work, reading specialist candidates must successfully pass the GACE in Reading and apply through the Georgia College certification officer for recommendation to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission to have the Reading Specialist, P-12 added to their certificates. Candidates must have three years of teaching experience prior to acceptance to the non-degree Reading Specialist, P-12 Certificate Program.
